Many predicted significant changes If Jerod Mayo was elevated to head coach of the Patriots. One franchise legend even believed Mayo might sweep the Patriot’s house clean.
It may turn out that the turnover following Bill Belichick’s resignation was not as great as anticipated.
Jerod Mayo will be formally introduced by the Patriots as the 15th head coach in franchise history in two days.
It is “likely” that Bill O’Brien, the offensive coordinator, will continue in his role despite his relationship with Belichick the previous season. Perhaps even more unexpected are the potential reappearances of Belichick’s two sons.
“One other thing worth noting is that Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller and linebackers coach Steve, and safeties coach Brian, have both already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said in a story published Monday. “Over the course of working together to manage the Patriots’ defense for the past five years, Mayo and the older son (Steve) have become close.”
The institutional knowledge that have of the franchise would be useful to Mayo and the Kraft family. Steve first joined the team as a coaching assistant back in 2012, while Brian came aboard as a scouting assistant in 2016. On the defensive end of the ball, where New England has excelled the past several seasons, both of Belichick’s sons are also coaches.
Of course we await to see if Steve or Brian will take the rumored offer, Or if either of the sons or both would accompany their father to his next coaching gig, Dallas most likely.
