A new deal with Birmingham City has been inked by Krystian Bielik ahead of the forthcoming League One season.

Chris Davies must select a captain for Birmingham City, and Krystian Bielik has proven himself to be a capable leader.

Rather than leave after their relegation to League One, Krystian Bielik has committed the next three years to Birmingham City by signing a new contract, making a significant statement even beyond the signing of Swedish winger Emil Hansson. Bielik could have had plenty of offers if he chose to leave, but his decision to stay strengthens his case to be team captain.

 

Dion Sanderson, last season’s captain, is still with the team but his role as captain is uncertain, especially if Bielik is positioned as a central defender by coach Davies. With Blues seeking a new left-sided center-back, Sanderson’s starting position isn’t guaranteed. Even if Sanderson plays, it’s doubtful he’ll retain the captaincy given the end of last season’s events.

 

If the Blues’ management and Davies decide against reinstating Sanderson, options are limited. Lukas Jutkiewicz is a natural leader but, at 35, isn’t a guaranteed starter anymore.

 

Bielik stands out for several reasons beyond his contract renewal. Most crucially, he is almost certain to start in either defense or midfield. He is a calm and effective communicator with both his teammates and the media, consistently stepping up during good and bad times. Bielik’s belief in Davies’ philosophy and his deep understanding of football make him an ideal candidate to convey the coach’s messages.

 

While it’s possible Blues might sign another strong leader during the transfer window, if they don’t, Bielik is the obvious choice for captain. His latest commitment to the team underscores this.
