In a surprising turn of events, goalkeeper Claudia Moan has left Sunderland this summer. Moan, who has been with the club since her days in the academy, developed into one of the Championship’s top goalkeepers over the past 18 months, even securing the golden glove last season as Sunderland came close to promotion to the WSL. Despite expectations that she would remain a key player, the club announced her departure on social media earlier this week. Moan’s contract, signed last summer, expired recently, and while Sunderland offered her a new deal with improved terms, the 25-year-old chose to seek new opportunities.
Expressing her sentiments on Facebook, Moan said, “Making the decision to leave your hometown club is never an easy one to make, especially when you feel you had no other choice.” She extended her gratitude to the coaches, staff, and players at Sunderland, as well as to the fans who supported her over the past five years. Looking ahead, Moan is expected to attract significant interest following her impressive performances last season.
Joining her in departing from Sunderland are Mollie Rouse, Liz Ejupi, and Faye Mullen, with Rouse heading to a new opportunity in the USA.
