Sheffield Wednesday faced Derby County at Pride Park on Sunday afternoon, and from the game, Danny Rohl will have taken away a mix of lessons, both positive and negative. After their victory over Hull City on Tuesday, Wednesday hoped to build momentum with another away win. However, their performance in the first half left much to be desired, as they found themselves second best and ultimately trailing at the break due to their own mistakes.
Despite a tough first half, Sheffield Wednesday mounted a brilliant comeback after the interval. Goals from Barry Bannan and a late strike from Jamal Lowe secured a 2-1 victory for the Owls, giving them all three points in a crucial away match. The first half was marred by sloppy passing, as Wednesday’s inability to maintain possession led to numerous unforced errors. These mistakes handed Derby County the initiative, and though Wednesday struggled to dominate the ball, their poor distribution made the challenge even more difficult. Fortunately, the team’s performance improved in the second half, but Rohl will be keen to eliminate such errors going forward.
Defensive concerns also arose during the game. With Di’Shon Bernard suspended, Dominic Iorfa stepped in but only lasted the first half before being substituted due to injury. This forced Rohl into a defensive reshuffle, reverting to a back-four with Shea Charles filling in as a makeshift centre-half. This situation highlighted Sheffield Wednesday’s shortage of centre-back options, with Akin Famewo also sidelined until March. The looming January transfer window could see Rohl looking to strengthen this area to avoid relying on players like Charles out of position.
The team’s front three, consisting of Anthony Musaba, Djeidi Gassama, and Michael Smith, struggled throughout the game. Neither Musaba nor Gassama were able to create chances or threaten Derby’s defense, while Smith, despite his effort, failed to register a single shot in his 79 minutes on the pitch. It was only after the introduction of Josh Windass and the game-changing Jamal Lowe that the game began to open up for Sheffield Wednesday. Rohl will likely consider starting Windass and Lowe against Preston North End, as their influence was vital in turning the tide.
Barry Bannan, despite being 35 years old, showed he still has plenty to offer. After Wednesday fell behind, Bannan produced a moment of magic in the 64th minute, scoring from around 25 yards out with a lofted shot following a Derby clearance. He wasn’t just limited to the goal, though; Bannan also controlled the midfield and played a crucial role in steering his team toward the win.
With the victory, Sheffield Wednesday secured their second consecutive away win, something they hadn’t achieved all season. The triumph, particularly their resilience after falling behind, showcased the team’s spirit and determination. It was a much-needed result as Rohl’s side continues to climb the Championship table.
