49ERS ON THE BRINK: Can Kyle Shanahan’s Team Pull Off a Miracle Playoff Run?

The San Francisco 49ers’ 2024 season has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, but after their embarrassing 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, it’s clear that the team is on the brink of disaster. With a 5-6 record and a daunting remaining schedule, the 49ers’ playoff hopes are hanging by a thread.

Despite coach Kyle Shanahan’s optimism, the team’s chances of making the postseason are dwindling. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives them a 17% chance of making the playoffs, while FTN’s DVOA assigns them an 11.5% postseason possibility.

The 49ers’ remaining schedule is a gauntlet of tough opponents, including the 9-2 Buffalo Bills and the 10-1 Detroit Lions. To make matters worse, the team has been plagued by injuries, with quarterback Brock Purdy, end Nick Bosa, and tackle Trent Williams all missing Sunday’s game.

However, the 49ers are optimistic that they can turn their season around. Purdy is expected to return to practice on Wednesday, and Bosa and Williams are listed as day-to-day. The team is also hoping to get linebacker Dre Greenlaw back on the field soon.

Tight end George Kittle remains confident in the team’s ability to make a push for the playoffs. “We have really good players who have been in tough positions before, and we have got to go win some games,” he said.

The 49ers will need to win at least four of their remaining six games to have any chance of making the playoffs. It’s a tall order, but the team is determined to fight until the end. As Kittle said, “We’re going to push as hard as we can.”

While the odds are against them, the 49ers have shown flashes of brilliance this season. They have a talented roster and a coaching staff that has proven itself in the past. If they can get healthy and find some consistency, they might just be able to pull off a miracle playoff run.

But for now, the 49ers are on the brink, staring into the abyss of a lost season. Can they find a way to climb back out and make a push for the playoffs? Only time will tell.
