The San Francisco 49ers delivered an important update on Friday concerning the availability of quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive lineman Nick Bosa for Week 12. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed to reporters that both players would be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. In their absence, Brandon Allen will take the starting quarterback role for San Francisco.
This is a challenging setback for the 49ers, who currently hold a 5-5 record and face the formidable 7-3 Packers on the road in snowy conditions. A defeat would push the team below .500, leaving them with just six games to climb back into playoff contention.
Purdy’s unavailability isn’t entirely unexpected, as the quarterback has been limited in practice this week due to a shoulder injury. General Manager John Lynch had previously hinted at the possibility, indicating Allen would step in as the starter, with Josh Dobbs serving as the backup if needed. In his third season with the team, Purdy has been a reliable performer, amassing 2,613 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, along with 267 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns this season.
While Allen hasn’t played in a game this year, his NFL career includes 1,611 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, primarily from his time with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020-2021. Despite his lack of recent playtime, Allen may find some comfort in knowing that tight end George Kittle plans to play through a hamstring injury and will be available as a key offensive target.
On the defensive side, Nick Bosa’s absence due to a hip injury is another significant blow. The star defensive lineman has been a consistent force this season, tallying 36 tackles and 7 sacks. His absence will leave the 49ers shorthanded as they take on a strong Green Bay team in a critical matchup.
