2023 BRAVES PLAYER REVIEWS – SAM HILLIARD

In the 2023 season, with a remarkable 104-game victory, the Atlanta Braves required players to step up, and Sam Hilliard emerged as a key contributor early in the year. Acquired by AA during the 2022 off-season, Hilliard was viewed by some as a potential diamond in the rough for the Braves. When Michael Harris II faced an early-season injury, Hilliard seized the opportunity.

Demonstrating prowess in both defensive plays and offensive contributions, the former Colorado Rockie showcased his skills, particularly shining in April. Over 19 games, the left-handed batter boasted an impressive slash line of .296/.367/.904 with 54 at-bats. During this period, he hit three home runs and secured six RBIs. One of Hilliard’s standout performances occurred in an 11-0 victory against the Marlins, where he went 2-for-4 with two home runs.

Despite his notable contributions, Hilliard struggled to capture the attention of Braves’ manager Brian Snitker. Despite the challenges faced by Eddie Rosario and Marcell Ozuna, who continued to struggle, Snitker persisted with them, limiting Hilliard’s opportunities. Unfortunately, Hilliard’s season took a downturn when he sustained an injury on July 18, and he never returned to the Braves’ roster. His performance in the latter part of the season saw a dip, concluding the year with a batting average of .236/.295/.431. In the offseason, the Braves waived him, and he was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles off waivers. Braves Country extends its best wishes to Sam Hilliard in his new chapter with the Orioles.
