130-goal ex-Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic striker joins EFL club after summer release

Former Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Wigan striker Charlie Wyke has signed a two-year contract with Carlisle United. Wyke, who has scored 130 career goals, spent last season on loan at Rotherham United from Wigan Athletic but faced relegation from the Championship. Wigan released him at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Wyke, who scored 42 goals for Sunderland between 2018 and 2021, joined Rotherham on loan during the winter transfer window and became a free agent this summer. His move to Carlisle United was confirmed following the club’s relegation to League Two.

Carlisle manager Paul Simpson expressed his excitement about Wyke’s return, noting their previous attempts to sign him in January. Simpson highlighted Wyke’s proven goal-scoring ability and emphasized the club’s enthusiasm to work with him again.
